WHAT IS 'SHAMA'?
 In Arabic, the word 'shama' means 'light'. In Hebrew, the word 'shama' means 'knowledge', with several implications. The most basic meaning of 'shama' is "to hear intelligently", so that acquired knowledge becomes wisdom. The word also implies acting on and being led by that wisdom. 'Shama' knowledge, therefore, is not a passive accumulation of facts, but a vibrant understanding and corresponding course of action.

PROVIDING OPPORTUNITY
The Shama Foundation is a nonprofit organization providing broad-based, in-country educational opportunities for children of the African island nation of Madagascar . It provides these opportunities with the confidence that some of the learning will eventually become 'shama' knowledge. It does so with the confidence that a good level of education within a country reaches beyond individuals and touches the nation as a whole.

 

Shama candidates meet academic qualifications relevant to their educational level and exhibit evidence of financial need. Support is provided without regard to ethnicity, gender, or religious affiliation. Donated money goes to educational programs, scholarships and grants, promotional materials and activities, or the invested principal necessary to support them.
